Allegheny National Forest—Hall Barn

Description: The Hall Barn wildlife viewing site is home to more than 1000 Little Brown bats. Each summer evening the bats come streaming out of the barn window at dusk. Visitors can watch these bats fill the night sky, foraging on insects and dipping down to the Allegheny River for a drink of water. Several interpretative plaques provide information on bat ecology and the value of “old farm” habitats to a variety of wildlife. A USDA Forest Service Wildlife Viewing Areabat condo (8′ X 8′ box mounted on wooden posts) has been constructed to house additional bats. Warm season grasses have been planted in two fields to demonstrate the important food and cover these grasses provide.

Wildlife to Watch: Not only a good place to see bats but also home to a variety of songbirds including tree swallows, barn swallows, cliff swallows, yellow warblers, indigo buntings, yellow throats, mourning warblers, and woodcock.

Special Tips: Please be careful of poison ivy.

Driving Directions: From Warren head west on State Route 6 and then south on Route 62. The barn is located south of the town of Tidioute on the right (west) side of Rt. 62.
