The wetland is open to walking, but visitors are encouraged to view from the existing facility. The 100 acre area is closed to waterfowl hunting and no motorized vehicles are allowed inside the area.

USDA Forest Service Wildlife Viewing AreaWildlife to Watch: The Alpine Wetland Area was completed in 1993 to provide viewing for the public traveling along US 89. Many species of waterfowl, shorebirds and waterbirds can be seen here as well as mammals and smaller species. The scenery is beautiful. It is an Audubon “IBA or Important Birding Area” and part of the Wyoming Wildlife – Worth the Watching program. Seven dikes plus canals impound water from the Salt River even when the reservoir is low.

Special Tips: Caution: Water depths vary from very shallow to very deep. Moose also are often hidden in the willows and can be dangerous.
