Charles L. Peirce Wildlife and Forest Reservation

Description: Visitors to the reservation can observe a number of land management practices and participate in a variety of recreational activities. The mixed woodlands of oak, maple, white pine, and hemlock provide an excellent example of this part of the state’s forests. Some areas are intensively managed for timber and wildlife habitat and some areas remain wild.

Wildlife to Watch: In early summer, the woodlands teem with bird life. In some areas, you can hear the lovely songs of veeries, hermit thrushes, and wood thrushes. Solitary vireos, black-throated green warblers, and ovenbirds inhabit the area. The brooks and ponds are home to beaver, minks, and otters. Listen for spring peepers and wood frogs in the vernal pools in early spring. Watch for evidence of porcupines, deer, moose, and red squirrels.

Other Activities: There are more than 10 miles of hiking trails and old roads. The 5-mile Trout-n-Bacon trail is of particular interest. A map and compass are recommended.

Driving Directions: From Route 9 in Stoddard, go west on Route 123 for 2 miles. Turn right at the fire station, cross a bridge, and immediately bear right onto a dirt road. Use the small parking area after 0.4 miles if you are in a regular vehicle. If you have a 4-wheel drive, continue another 0.6 miles to the parking area with the SPNHF sign. Or, bear left after the bridge, go 0.9 miles, and park along the road near the SPNHF sign. Trails leave from all three locations.
