Description: Nestled amid mixed conifers and ponderosa pines, this riparian area provides an excellent outdoor setting for the physically challenged, as well as for other visitors. A stream passes through woods and meadow, while the forested slopes of Sandia Peak’s eastern face rise on three sides.

Wildlife to Watch: Occasional viewing of Abert squirrels, the site’s official “mascots.” Good viewing of mule deer, red-naped sapsucker, Steller’s jay, warbling vireo, black-headed grosbeak, junco, western tanager, broad-tailed hummingbird, and other species. Warbler species include Audubon’s, yellow-rumped, Virginia’s, and Grace’s.

Special Tips: Part of a national recreation trail, with excellent barrier-free facilities and interpretive signs in print and Braille.

Driving Directions: From Interstate 40, take the Tijeras/New Mexico Highway 337 exit 6 miles east of Albuquerque-watch for NM 14 sign as you exit. Travel north on NM 14 for 6 miles to the junction of NM 536(Sandia Crest Road). Continue 1.6 miles on Sandia Crest Road, then turn left at the Sulphur Canyon/Cienega Canyon sign. Drive 0.5 miles, turning right at Cienega Canyon sign; parking area is 0.5 miles ahead on right.
