Michigan Wildlife Viewing Areas

Add Photos

Description: Known locally as the “Shiawassee Flats,” the refuge lies in the Saginaw Bay watershed, historically one of the largest and most productive wetland ecosystems in Michigan. Four rivers converge on the refuge – the Tittabawassee, Flint, Cass, and Shiawassee.

Wildlife to Watch: The refuge’s diverse habitats and land management practices result in a great variety of wildlife species occurring here. Over 200 species of migratory birds (277 total recorded species), including raptors, shore and wading birds, and more than 100 songbird species visit the refuge annually. Shiawassee NWR is designated as a United States Important Bird Area for its global significance to migratory waterfowl. During peak populations usually in late October, up to 20,000 Canada geese and 30,000 ducks are present.

Three wildlife observation platforms are available along the Ferguson Bayou Trail, two with spotting scopes. Two permanent photo blinds are also available here. Green Point Environmental Learning Center has wildlife viewing areas that visitors can enjoy from inside the building.

Special Tips: The refuge manages the Green Point Environmental Learning Center in a cooperative venture with the City of Saginaw, MI. The Center provides programs in environmental education to youths and adults of the surrounding area.

Other Activities: Over 10 miles of trails are available to the public for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and the general enjoyment of America’s wildlife heritage on the Ferguson Bayou Trail (off of Curtis Road), Woodland Trail (off of Stroebel Road), and trails at the Cass River Unit in Bridgeport. Green Point Environmental Learning Center offers more than 2 miles of trails for hiking and cross country skiing; bikes are not allowed.

Driving Directions: The refuge headquarters is 5 miles south of Saginaw. From I-75, take the Bridgeport exit and turn west onto Dixie Highway; go 1/2 mile. Turn left onto Fort Road, and go about 2 miles. Turn west onto Curtis Road, and go about 4 miles to refuge headquarters.
