Lloyd Center for Enviro. Studies and Demarest Lloyd State Park
|Description: A 100-year-old oak/hickory forest meets the sea at the Slocums River estuary. An extensive visitor center with an observation deck makes the Lloyd Center an exceptional viewing and educational site. The larger, unstaffed Demarest Lloyd State Park adds a freshwater marsh, salt marsh, brackish pond, maritime forest, sand beach, and additional river frontage to the habitat mix.|
Wildlife to Watch: Enjoy views of the Slocums River, Buzzards Bay, and the Elizabeth Islands from the Lloyd Center’s top floor observation deck, where up to 75 species of birds have been seen during a single day. Stop at the butterfly garden for a glimpse of a spicebush swallowtail or ruby-throated hummingbird. Harbor seals, common loons, and a variety of diving ducks are winter regulars within the estuary. At nearby Demarest Lloyd State Park, check salt marsh and beach margins for greater yellowlegs, willets, snowy egrets, and green crabs. Goldfinches and purple finches are year-round residents. Colorful warblers can be seen gleaning insects in the forest canopy during spring and fall migration.
Other Activities: Take a leisurely walk on one of several trails through the oak/hickory forest, to the salt marsh, or to the kettle pond, where an observation blind awaits.
