Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge
Description: The Cache River and Cypress Creek Wetland was designated a "Wetland of International Importance" especially for waterfowl and for its rich diversity of plant and animal communities; it claims some of the oldest living trees east of the Mississippi River and harbors 91% of Illinois' high-quality swamp habitat.

Wildlife to Watch: The site highlights a 200-acre tract of contiguous forest and has received national recognition for its songbird populations. The Limekiln Springs Trail, off Cache Chapel Road, offers 2.5 miles of trail along limestone outcrops, floodplain forest, and coldwater springs. The Bellrose Waterfowl Reserve Viewing Platform, off Cache Chapel Road provides year-round viewing of migratory birds and resident wildlife.

Special Tips: The refuge and adjacent lands owned by the State and The Nature Conservancy provide over 20 miles of hiking trails through the Cache River Wetlands.

Driving Directions:
Take Interstate 57, and exit at #18, Shawnee College Road. Travel approximately 7.1 miles east to the refuge office located on the Shawnee College Rustic Campus, Building D. The refuge is approximately 22 miles north of Cairo, Illinois.
