Caumsett State Historic Park
Description: Designated as a significant coastal fish and wildlife habitat and Bird Conservation Area, Caumsett State Historic Park includes woodlands, rocky shores, salt marshes and a freshwater pond and is host to more than 200 species of birds.

Wildlife to Watch: You may observe endangered shorebirds such as piping plovers and least terns nesting along the shore. In addition, you may see osprey nesting in the park and fishing at the shore. Visit the park in summer for a chance to spy great and snowy egrets, tree swallows, frogs and nearly 60 species of butterflies. You also may glimpse fiddler and horseshoe crabs, as well as diamondbacked terrapins. Red-tailed hawks, red foxes, eastern gray squirrels and white-tailed deer are year-round residents. During winter, watch common loons in Long Island Sound and ducks at the freshwater pond.

Special Tips: The park is open year-round, from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. A vehicle-use fee is charged. Check the park’s website (see contact information below) for the amount. Visitors may enjoy scuba diving by permit.

Driving Directions:
From I-495 E/Long Island Expy., take exit 39 toward Glen Cove Rd./ Hempstead/Glen Cove. Merge onto Old Westbury Rd. Turn left onto Glen Cove Rd./ NYS Rte. 900B. Turn right onto NY 25A E/N. Hempstead Turnpike/Northern Blvd. After 12 miles, turn left onto W. Neck Rd. After nearly 5 miles, W. Neck Rd. turns slightly right and becomes Lloyd Harbor Rd.

From I-495 W/Long Island Expy., take exit 44 to merge onto NY-135 N toward Syosset. Take exit 14E for New York 25 E. toward Woodbury. Make a slight right onto Jericho Tpk. Turn left onto Woodbury Rd., and continue onto Co. Rd. 11. Turn left onto Woodbury Rd. Stay on Woodbury Rd., and continue to W. Neck Rd. Follow directions above from W. Neck Rd.
