NY DEC Watchable Wildlife

Outdoor Discovery

High Rock Park
Description: Often referred to as one of the most tranquil places in New York City, this site is noted for its quiet ponds and deep woods. Many habitats support a diverse array of plants and wildlife that visitors can enjoy while walking the trails. The park also includes five ponds and various wetlands.

Wildlife to Watch: Wood ducks, great blue herons and muskrats all make their homes here, along with hawks, owls, migrating warblers, woodpeckers and frogs. Visitors might also see egrets, snapping turtles, water snakes, peepers or brown bats.

Special Tips: The nature center is open by appointment only. Mt. Moses, a 240-foot hill, offers a 360-degree panoramic view—considered one of New York City’s most spectacular.

Other Activities: The moderate-level Green Trail (Gretta Moulton Trail) travels along kettle ponds and knobs, formations left behind by receding glaciers. The upland forest includes a patch of native persimmon trees, which produce goldenorange fruits relished by people as well as wildlife. The easier Lavender Trail takes visitors through areas of jewelweed, skunk cabbage, grasses and water plants.
