Description: At Cienega Creek Preserve, a perennial creek channel is surrounded by mountains and rocky hills. A section of the creek within the Preserve has been designated as a “Unique Water of Arizona”. The mature cottonwood and willow trees that line the creek are a dramatic contrast to the surrounding Sonoran Desert. Rich cultural and historical features are displayed here as well. . One of the most significant vantage points is the area near the Marsh Station Road Bridge over Cienega Creek. The visual features and relatively good access from this point make it one of the most popular places to visit on the Preserve.

Wildlife to Watch: The lush riparian vegetative community along the creek accommodates a great number of wildlife species that include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Visitors should watch for lowland leopard frog, checkered gartersnake, common kingsnake, Gila topminnow, yellow-billed cuckoo, northern beardless-tyrannulet, summer tanager, blue grosbeak, gray and Cooper’s hawks, and mule deer.

Special Tips: The preserve is a protected riparian system without designated trails or facilities for visitors. The Arizona Trail system along the edge of the preserve allows equestrian, biking, and hiking use. The management plan for Cienega Creek Preserve restricts the number of visitors per day, and permits are required for access.
