Description: This large state forest is made up of northern hardwoods: sugar maple, yellow birch, beech, and balsam fir. Streams, wetlands, and ponds dot the forest.

Wildlife to Watch: Watch for moose tracks and scat near the pond. Coyotes, bears, snowshoe hares, and a variety of other animals live here. Look for wood ducks and hooded mergansers on the pond. In the late spring and summer, the sounds of songbirds fill the woods; listen for ovenbirds, wood thrushes, yellow-throated and red-eyed vireos, rose-breasted grosbeaks, black-throated blue and black-throated green warblers, and scarlet tanagers.

Other Activities: An easy half-mile trail leads from the wayside area to scenic Butterfield Pond.
